Shop till you drop, glide across the ice rink and toboggan down the slope - you're sure to build up an appetite at Nottingham's Winter Wonderland.

The organisers of this year's festive fun have really upped their game, sp when it comes to eating and drinking your way around the Old Market Square, we're talking quality.

With tapas from Nottinghamshire's best restaurant of the year, gooey cheesy goodness, German sausages and chocolate galore, this is the best offering yet.

Edwards Mellors, from the Mellors Group, asked Bar Iberico to get involved. He said: "It's the right sort of food for us, street food, and it won best restaurant 2018, so when we can bring the two things together it works."

There for seven weeks, until New Year's Eve, it might be time to dig out those elasticated waistbands if you're planning a visit (or several).

Bar Iberico

The award-winning Hockley restaurant has gone mobile with a wooden shack in the heart of the Christmas spectacular. Crispy chicken with spicy Jerez sauce, crispy cauliflower with ginger, patatas bravas, and wood-fired flabreads with a host of different toppings (£4.50 to £7) can be ordered for takeaway or there's table service in the Sur La Piste bar.

"We were looking at outside catering when we were asked to do this. We liked the challenge of it. We have a good reputation but a lot of people don't know who we were so having your name in neon nights in Market Square can only help," said Dan Lindsay, who runs the business with chef Jacque Ferreira.

The Melt and Grill

A cheese lover's dream, the aroma has crowds flocking to the stall where huge wheels of Heritage cheese from the Alps are melted into gooey goodness.

After bubbling away under a grill, the raclette cheese is then scraped off and served with potatoes and pickles (£6).

"People say it's burning but it makes it crisp on top and creamy underneath. It's a taste sensation," said Kelsey Stanworth, who is running the stall with husband Stuart.

As well as raclette, there's halloumi, mozzarella, mature cheddar and gruyere.

Monsieur Melt (£6) is a sandwich oozing with cheese, ham and Dijon mustard; Philly steak is served with onions, peppers and cheese (£8) and there loaded fries with mushrooms, pancetta and melted cheese (£6) or halloumi fries with a drizzle of honey (£5).

All the grilling is done on equipment from Switzerland, the home of raclette, but all the food is sourced from Nottingham businesses. The cheese is from The Cheese Shop, in Flying Horse Arcade, there's bread from Birds Bakery, cookie dough blondies from a local baker and the honey is from Notts bees.

Hot roast chestnuts and toasted marshmallows

It doesn't get more Christmassy than this: chestnuts roasted over hot coals (£2.50 a cupful) and toasted marshmallows (£2).

The stall owner sits there trimming the chestnuts in a little wooden hut. "It's a seasonal thing. You can't do it any other time," she said.

"Some of the younger ones didn't know what they were but they are going down well with them."

A glug of mulled wine and a box of kartoffel are a match made in heaven. A regular at the Christmas market, the stall's sauteed potato dishes go down a storm. The meaty version comes with German sausage and smoked bacon or there's a veggie alternative with onions and peppers (both £5).

The stall is also selling a range of German sausages (£5) and garlic mushrooms (£3.50).

"Kebabs are never out of fashion," said stallholder Kimberley Appleton, from Basford. After selling coffee at last year's Winter Wonderland, she and partner Callum Bedford have gone one step further this year with a kebab rotisserie.

Doner, chicken, shish, lamb kofta and mixed kebabs in a pitta or wrap (£6 to £8) are on the menu. "It was our first day yesterday and everyone said it was the nicest kebab they'd had in Nottingham," said Callum.

Snow Kisses, soft meringue smothered in chocolate, come in flavours including latte, rum and raisin, coconut and raspberry. They're £1 for one or a gift box of 12 is £10. As long as you don't store in the fridge they'll last for weeks, making an ideal Christmas gift - if you can resist eating them, of course.

As temperatures drop, an indulgent hot chocolate will warm the cockles (£3 to £4). New this year are a luxurious vanilla fudge sundae with all the toppings and Ferrero Rocher with gold spray.

Stray from the throng in Slab Square via Exchange Walk and you'll find a wooden hut near Marks & Spencer specialising in Nottingham's version of that Chinese favourite.

Choose from crispy duck wraps with cucumber, spring onions and hoisin sauce (£6) or a gluten-free version, minus the wrap, for a fiver. Accompany with duck fat fries (£3). Next door is...

German Sausage

There's few things more enticing than the smell of fried onions which draw hungry passersby to this stall. As well as bratwurst, there's smoky cheese or bacon krakauer (£5), served in a bun with onions or sauerkraut.

It is one of the few outlets serving vegan-friendly grub, a meat-free bratwurst (all £5).

Zara Bishton, who is manning the stall, said: "The vegan bratwurst have been very popular."
