An Indiana man with schizophrenia who allegedly stabbed his mother to death, tussled over the knives with his brother, and escaped only to be shot in the leg by his mother’s boyfriend is in custody and charged with murder.
Police in Speedway, Indiana, arrested Vinson Edge, 39, on Monday after seeking him for more than a day in the Sunday slaying.
Cops were called at 9:27 p.m. Sunday for a report of a stabbing in this small town 6 miles west of Indianapolis.
Outside the house was a man wielding a baseball bat, the Indianapolis Star reported, who proved to be Edge’s brother. He told police that Vinson Edge had stabbed their mother and that he’d gotten the bat to try and save his mom.
Inside, officers found a 58-year-old woman dead at the scene. Vinson Edge “was no longer at the scene when officers arrived,” Speedway police said in a statement. Officers also found a large kitchen knife on the floor nearby.
The brother, who police did not name, said Vinson had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and had stopped taking his medication a month earlier. Soon after, he began “acting strangely,” the brother told police, although he had never previously been violent.
The altercation with his mother began a few hours after she got back from a party in nearby Gary, reported the Indianapolis Star, citing court documents. She tried to talk to him, but Edge “stared blankly at a wall and did not respond.”
At some point she said she was going to see her boyfriend, WXIN-TV reported. Suddenly he snapped, reported WXIN. Vinson started demanding his “inheritance,” WXIN said, then grabbed the kitchen knives and stabbed his mother 21 times.
Police then went off looking for Edge, who they’d heard was headed to downtown Indianapolis. However, the next day, Terry Brown, Vickie Edge’s boyfriend, got to him first, and shot him in the leg. He later told police that he’d seen Vinson lunging for a gun.
That’s where police found the men at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, WXIN said. Vinson Edge was taken to a hospital in stable condition, the Indianapolis Star reported. Brown stayed on scene and was cooperating with authorities.
“I’m kind of scared how our family is going to recover from it,” said Samantha Riley, who is married to John Riley, Vickie’s nephew, speaking to WXIN. “She was the heartbeat of the family.”
