What you Get

$1.3 Million Homes in Connecticut, Hawaii and Illinois

A 1760 clapboard house in New Milford, a cottage on Maui and an 1878 bungalow in Wilmette.

Known as the Buckingham Estate, this vintage Colonial and its outbuildings were originally owned by the family of a 17th-century settler in what is now Litchfield County, Conn. The property occupies the top of Second Hill, the site of a Revolutionary War camp. In 1968, it became the weekend refuge of the pianist Vladimir Horowitz and his wife, Wanda Toscanini Horowitz, who sold it to the current owners in 1978. The home is three miles east of the town center and about 70 miles from Upper Manhattan.

Size: 3,773 square feet

Price per square foot: $343

Indoors: Passing under a neoclassical archway, one enters a foyer with chestnut floorboards and a graciously curving staircase. To the right is the living room, which has a green marble fireplace and walls variously covered in picture moldings, paisley paper and built-in bookshelves with lower cabinets.

The dining room that follows has a bay window and a brass fireplace. In the kitchen, there are terra-cotta tile floors and original beams, as well as industrial stainless steel counters and restaurant-grade appliances. A family room off the kitchen has a wood-burning stove and a beehive oven.

On the second floor is the master suite, with a tiled fireplace that has cabinets over the mantel. The Italian-style marble en suite bathroom has built-in floor-to-ceiling storage, a makeup vanity, a soaking tub and a glass-walled shower decorated with mosaic tile.

Also upstairs are three guest bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom and another with wood paneling and trim, currently used as a library.

On the lower level, with its exposed stone foundation, the owners created a wine grotto that has a copper sink and a wood-burning stove.

The stone-faced two-story guesthouse has hand-hewed beams, a combined living-and-dining room, an upstairs bedroom, two bathrooms (one on each floor), a greenhouse and tandem parking for two cars. The barn, with its cupola and chestnut beams, dates to the late 18th century and could be used as a garage.

Outdoor space: The seven-acre landscaped property is next to 200 acres of protected land and has stone walls, rail fences, lawns and gardens. The dining room walks out to a stone porch. The heated pool has a patio with an outdoor kitchen.

This property is on the west side of Maui, 50 steps from a white-sand swimming beach, between the noted resort areas of Kahekili (less than four miles south) and Kapalua (nearly two miles north). A five-minute bicycle ride takes you to a local convenience store; a farmers’ market and the nearest supermarket are 10 minutes by bike.

Size: 1,552 square feet

This house, in a suburb 40 minutes north of the Chicago Loop, was once the village hall. When the building was replaced in 1910, the owner of a local hardware store bought it and moved it to its current site, near the Wilmette business district, a block west of Green Bay Road. It is owned by the actor, writer and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Julia Sweeney and her husband, Michael Blum, a biophysicist.

Size: 3,678 square feet

Price per square foot: $353

Indoors: In 2003, the house was thoroughly remodeled by its previous owners, who extended the back, laid down new oak floors on the main level, updated the plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems, and replaced the roof. Beginning in 2009, Ms. Sweeney and Mr. Blum made further adjustments, including converting a main-floor office into a bedroom with an en suite bathroom and creating an additional bedroom and a screening room in the basement. They also moved and rebuilt the coach house and did extensive landscaping and hardscaping.

Crossing the elevated front porch, you enter a foyer that opens on the left to a large living room with a bay window and a stone fireplace, converted from wood-burning to gas. To the right of the entrance is a guest bedroom with a private full bathroom carved out of a former hallway bathroom. (A small powder room remains.)

The living room connects to a dining room and, beyond, to a family room with an L-shaped breakfast banquette. This area flows across the back of the house into an open kitchen with newly refinished glass-front cabinets and a marble-topped wood island. A small desk area is off the dining room, across from a butler’s pantry.

The four upstairs bedrooms include a master suite with a walk-in closet and a recently remodeled bathroom with a spa tub and separate steam-shower and toilet area. There is also a laundry room on this level.

The home theater in the basement has four motorized reclining chairs, a JVC projection system, a 105-inch screen, five speakers and a subwoofer.

Outdoor space: An enlarged rear patio surrounded by a raised garden bed steps down to a lawn with new brick paths. In rebuilding the coach house, the owners gutted and restored a one-bedroom apartment above the two-car garage. The lot is 200 by 50 feet.
