In 1944, Henry J. Larkin, a structural engineer, designed and built this house on 600 acres of farmland. He and his wife lived there for four decades until she died, at which point the property was donated to the National Audubon Society. By that time, the building had fallen into disrepair. Discovering that the steel-reinforced concrete construction was so sturdy as to be prohibitively expensive to raze, the Audubon Society sold the building, along with 7.58 acres, in 1993 to the current owner, who rebuilt what was effectively an empty shell. The house is surrounded by conservation land in a remote portion of Rhode Island, 13 miles west of the center of Coventry, near the Connecticut border.

Size: 2,520 square feet

Price per square foot: $170

Indoors: The current layout and décor reflect renovations done since 2010. The main level has walls punctuated by eight sets of double glass doors, raw concrete ceilings and floors covered in large ceramic tiles. To the right of the central wood staircase is a combined living-and-dining room that runs the length of the house and includes a fireplace built of local stone, with a gas starter. To the left is an equally long chef’s kitchen with two islands, custom dark-wood cabinets, granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances. This level also includes a half bathroom.

Upstairs, the floors are wood-grain patterned tile, and there are two large bedrooms, each with its own balcony. The master bedroom has a strié wall treatment incorporating metallic blue paint. An upstairs study was sacrificed to create an enlarged guest bedroom with a trio of glass-door closets. The bathroom was updated in 2015 with a black-granite tub surround; it also has a walk-in shower. A third balcony is off a seating niche on the landing.

Outdoor space: Specimen trees, lilies, ferns and edgings created from boulders are among the attractions. A stone patio offers a place for seating and dining. The owner completed an unfinished two-car garage using the original 1940s materials, which were still at hand.

Hermitage is a suburb 14 miles east of downtown Nashville, with easy access to the local international airport (seven miles southwest). This house is just off Interstate 40 and a five-minute drive from a shopping center.

Size: 1,939 square feet

Price per square foot: $232

Indoors: The one-and-a-half-story frame house clad in limestone still has its original natural wood finishes and stained glass, but its electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems were updated in the past six years, and its roof dates to 2013.

The living room is lined in wood and has a limestone fireplace. Next to it is a study with a paneled wainscot, a window seat with drawers and a door with multicolored glass panes opening to a room used as a bar area. Beyond that is a kitchen with a beamed ceiling and solid wood cabinetry. The adjacent sunroom with tile floors, timber walls and a wood stove is currently used as a dining room.

One bedroom is on the main floor and two bedrooms are upstairs, with a full bathroom on each floor. The 3.01-acre property also includes a guest cabin with a downstairs living room and kitchenette and upstairs bathroom.

Outdoor space: There are two man-made ponds (one with koi), a swimming pool and pool deck and a patio with a gazebo. Parking is in a detached two-car garage with a workshop.

Taxes: $1,935

Built by a stove manufacturer who later served as a justice of the peace and probate judge in Manhattan, when this community of about 55,000 had all of 100 residents — and once visited by the statesman and newspaper editor Horace Greeley — this house has changed hands only once in more than 65 years. The owners thoroughly remodeled it, replacing the mechanical systems and updating the kitchen and bathrooms. It is a half-mile from Kansas State University and across the street from a highly regarded elementary school. The West Loop Shopping Center is less than a mile northwest. The house is also an easy walk to Aggieville, a retail center near the university with boutiques, coffee shops and bookstores.

Size: 3,680 square feet

Price per square foot: $115

Indoors: The heated glass front porch topped by a balcony is an addition of indeterminate date. Passing through it, you enter a center hall with narrow-plank floors and a wood staircase. To the left is an office; to the right is a living room with 10-foot ceilings, two seating areas and a native limestone fireplace. Straight ahead is the dining room — formerly a kitchen, where the original cabinetry has been preserved. The new eat-in kitchen lies beyond; it has Craftsman-style cabinets, a central island with a six-burner Viking cooktop and a breakfast area with three walls of glass. The full bathroom on this floor has a tiled nature scene on the wall over the Art Deco-style bathtub.

The three second-floor bedrooms include a master across the hall from a bathroom with double sinks and a walk-in shower. A second bedroom has access to the balcony over the porch. This floor also has a laundry room.

Much of the third floor is taken up by a bedroom with parquet floors, rough limestone walls and a wood-paneled ceiling crisscrossed with beams. An original wood stove is also up there. The bathroom has a limestone wall and a shower.

Outdoor space: The 0.66-acre lot includes a large lawn with an in-ground sprinkler system, a koi pond and multiple gardens, including one with white-picket fencing. The back deck has multiple seating or lounging areas. The detached garage includes a second-floor artist’s studio.

Taxes: $5,416 (2018)
