June 12 is opening day for Dunkirk Farmers Market

Wednesday, June 12 will begin the 2019 Dunkirk Farmers Market season. The Market will take place every Wednesday through Oct. 16, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Dunkirk Senior Center on Ruggles Street (rain or shine).

“We are excited to kickoff the 2019 market season and I would like to welcome Kevin Luce on as our new Dunkirk Farmers Market Manager.” says EJ Hayes, City of Dunkirk Deputy Director of Planning & Development. Hayes also announced that the Market has again been selected to the Field & Fork Network’s Double Up Program, “We are thrilled to take part in the NYS Double Up Food Bucks Program again this year,” “The program allows SNAP users to double up to $20 of their SNAP dollars at the Market. SNAP money can go towards any of the foods eligible at a grocery store; the extra Double Up dollars are for fresh produce. It’s a wonderful program helping SNAP users access fresh WNY foods, while keeping SNAP dollars local to support our farmers.” The Double Up Program begins July 1 and runs through the end of the season.

Roberto Fred Farms and Richard Feinen Farms will return to the Market weekly in 2019. They offer a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, herbs, flowers, preserves, honey, and vegetable plants. New vendor Kwilos Farms will offer free-range beef, maple products, along with eggs and other products. Gardens of Eternity will return in 2019, offering a range of natural body products, jewelry, handmade washcloths and bathmats, and more.

Siri Thai Food Truck will be at the Dunkirk Market for most of the Market’s second Wednesday Events from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., including Opening Day.

Opening Day will feature Eternal Nyghts DJ Company. Eat Smart NY will host a table from 9 to 11 a.m., offering nutritional info, recipes, a cooking demo and samples. Veterans Affairs of Chautauqua County will be distributing Fresh Connect checks to Veterans for the first three weeks of the market, and Cattaraugus Community Action will be present on Opening Day to assist qualified residents in signing up for SNAP. Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. will offer an informational table about their services, and Eat Smart NY will offer nutrition information starting at 11 a.m.

The Dunkirk Farmers Market accepts EBT/SNAP benefits, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits, and WIC VF checks. FreshConnect checks will be distributed through June 30, but can be redeemed through the end of the season.

The Dunkirk Farmers Market thanks the Chautauqua County Health Network and the Field & Fork Network for their generous support. With questions, contact E.J.
