Dunkirk Town Board hears LED pitch

It was the Dunkirk Town Board’s turn June 18 to hear National Grid’s proposal for streetlight conversions to light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Part of the sales pitch: The town could actually make a little money if it changes over.

The utility has gone to other local municipal boards in recent months to drum up interest in its LED incentive program, which offers financial compensation for conversions from the traditional sodium vapor lights. Fran Porpiglia, who works out of National Grid’s Fredonia barn, did the honors at Tuesday’s meeting.

“LED lighting right now, that’s what’s going in — it’s everywhere,” she said, noting that it is getting hard to find traditional light bulbs for home use in some areas.

She said that it would cost the town $3,700 to convert all its streetlights — which are all “cobra head” style, with no decorative poles — to LED at once. However, she said that woud make the town eligible for $3,990 in incentives.

National Grid is gradually converting all its streetlights to LED, using that technology for replacements when bulbs burn out. Porpiglia noted, “The benefit of this (incentive program) is you can get your lights done all as LED at once without having to wait for them to burn out.”

However, “Lighting is a judgement call depending on your area,” she said. “That’s why we put it up to the towns. You should know your area best.”

She concluded by noting the program money is limited, so spots in the program are, too. “We’re close to getting them filled,” she said.

“I’d like to see us move forward, especially if no money has to come from us,” Dunkirk Town Supervisor Richard Purol said.

The board will consider a resolution allowing National Grid to go forward with the streetlight conversions at a special meeting it scheduled for Tuesday, July 2 at 6:30 p.m.
