SAN CLEMENTE – It was not perfect. But it sure was impressive.
St. John Bosco was in dominating form again Friday in a 56-6 win over San Clemente in a CIF-Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal playoff game at San Clemente High.
The Braves (12-0) advance to next week’s semifinals in which they will play the winner of Saturday’s Oaks Christian-JSerra quarterfinal. Oaks Christian-JSerra was to be played Friday at JSerra but was postponed a day because of the impact that fires near Oaks Christian have had on that area.
St. John Bosco beat JSerra 35-28, the Braves’ only close win, in a Trinity League game Sept. 28.
San Clemente concluded the season at 7-5. The Tritons, South Coast League champions, after a 1-4 start had won six in a row including a win over Murrieta Valley in the first round last week.
St. John Bosco junior quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those touchdown passes, of 52 and 80 yards, went to junior receiver Kristopher Hutson. The other was to Colby Bowman for 57 yards.
Braves senior Trent McDuffie scored two touchdowns, one on a 76-yard punt return and the other on a 12-yard run. Braves sophomore Jode McDuffie, not related to Trent, scored on a 77-yard punt return.
St. John Bosco shut out San Clemente until the final play of the game, a 17-yard touchdown pass from Tritons quarterback Brendan Costello to Jaydel Jenkins.
The Braves had shut out Serra of Gardena 49-0 in the first round of the playoffs. Friday’s game was the fifth time this season St. John Bosco has scored 56 points.
St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro was happy with the businesslike approach his team again took to Friday’s game.
“We executed extremely well,” Negro said. “We understand our schemes and our kids are very coachable. We’re sound in a bunch of different areas.”
San Clemente struggled to 126 yards of total offense. The Tritons’ passing game had a tough night, averaging only 5 yards a completion.
It did not take long for St. John Bosco to assert itself. San Clemente took the game-opening kickoff, gained 2 yards on a run and tossed two incompletions and then punted. McDuffie received that punt and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. And the route was on from there.
St. John Bosco had a 28-0 lead at halftime and a took a 49-0 lead into the fourth quarter that was played with a running clock.
