Veteran Los Amigos football coach Carl Agnew, who built a steady contender in the Garden Grove League, has resigned and accepted the defensive coordinator position at Lakewood under Coach Scott Meyer, Agnew confirmed Tuesday.

Agnew, who led the Lobos for 11 seasons, said he will continue to teach history at Los Amigos but resigned from the football post to spend more time with his twin 10-year-old daughters and to be closer to the family’s home in La Habra.

He struck a friendship with Meyer as the Lobos played Meyer’s Corona del Mar teams three consecutive seasons in the CIF-SS quarterfinals from 2011-13.

Corona del Mar won all three games en route to titles, but Agnew led Los Amigos to the playoffs seven times, including five trips to the quarterfinals. The Lobos also twice won nine games under Agnew.

Agnew arrived at Los Amigos after a coaching stint at Golden West College and guided the Lobos to a share of the Garden Grove League title in his first season in 2008.

Los Amigos finished second to Garden Grove five times.

“I had a pretty good run,” said Agnew, who finished with a 57-65 record at the school. “I’ve been proud to be part of it.”

Los Amigos finished 3-7 this past season and 0-5 in league as it encountered key injuries, including one to running back Brian Pacheco (knee). But the Lobos’ frosh-soph team finished 7-3 overall and second in league to Santiago.

Agnew believes there is young talent in the Los Amigos program that could provide a foundation for success in the next few years.

Meyer recently took the reins at Lakewood after resigning at University after one season. He left Corona del Mar for a three-year tenure at Servite.

Agnew’s defensive background includes playing linebacker at Chapman. He served as an assistant at Los Amigos under Roger Takahashi in the early 2000s.
