Coronavirus-related hospitalizations appeared to hit their lowest point across California in nearly six weeks on Wednesday, Aug. 12.

State health officials reported 112 fewer COVID-related hospitalizations on Wednesday, marking the eighth day straight that hospitalizations had declined.

As of Wednesday, 6,647 people were in hospitals. According to state data reported by the daily tracker, hospitalizations were at 6,812 on July 1.

The state had 8,522 new cases and 187 new deaths, reported as of Wednesday, bringing the total cases to 591,566 and deaths to 10,783, according to unofficial counts from county websites.

The state’s breakdown of cases by age is as follows:

  • 5 and younger: 2% (11,133)
  • 5-17: 7.4% (40,971)
  • 18-34: 35.3% (195,808)
  • 35-49: 25% (138,811)
  • 50-59: 14% (77,706)
  • 60-64: 5.1% (28,154)
  • 65-69: 3.5% (19,380)
  • 70-74: 2.4% (13,500)
  • 75-79: 1.7% (9,354)
  • 80 and older: 3.4% (18,595)

The state’s breakdown of deaths by age group is as follows:

    • 5 and younger: 0% (0)
    • 5-17: 0% (1)
    • 18-34: 1.5% (150)
    • 35-49: 5.8% (595)
    • 50-59: 10.1% (1,025)
    • 60-64: 8% (813)
    • 65-69: 9.9% (1,010)
    • 70-74: 11.3% (1,148)
  • 75-79: 11.3% (1,151)
  • 80 and older: 42.1% (4,278)
