Minicoy in Lakshadweep soon to have an Airport and better infrastructure
New Delhi, Jul 27: In a development initiative by the NITI Aayog for islands separated from the mainland of India, a committee constituted by the Aayog under the chairmanship of T Haque accompanied by representatives from Union ministry of home affair, Union ministry of tribal affairs, ministry of environment and forests, adviser (NRE), NITI Aayog along with Indian Air Force visited Minicoy and addressed the related issues for implementation of identified projects in Lakshadweep for its holistic development.
Sources said that an interactive session with officers and other stakeholders including islanders holding land required for the proposed projects such as developing an Airport and developing tourism infrastructure in Minicoy was held at Deputy Collector's office where HoDs from several departments, DP/VDP members, village moopans and land owners participated in the meeting convened by the government officials.
Issue of Pandaram land also discussed in the meeting. The chairman and members of the committee explained the aims and objectives of their visit and requested wholehearted cooperation for the implementation the proposed developmental projects in Minicoy. After discussions, the committee visited proposed site for Airport at North end which starts from the newly constructed Indian Coast Guard station and the Thundi area for tourism development. The dream of an Airport at Minicoy will come to a reality soon, it is hoped, which will boost the connectivity to this isolated island Minicoy.
