Remembrance Day services have been taking place at war memorials throughout Orkney today, the centenary of the Armistice that ended World War One.

The biggest event in the county took place in Kirkwall as numerous uniformed organisations and Legion members paraded between the Kirkwall Branch of the Royal British Legion and St Magnus Cathedral, led by Kirkwall City Pipe Band.

A huge number of members of the public lined the parade route, and gathered on Broad Street for the ceremony, held under blue skies and bright sunshine.

The open air service led by Lieutenant John Mitchinson of the Salvation Army took place on the Kirk Green, before the traditional wreath laying ceremony took place in front of the Kirkwall and St Ola War Memorial, which this year included doves of peace being released.

The parade then moved inside St Magnus Cathedral for a service led by Rev Fraser Macnaughton.

• Events began earlier this morning, when at 6am, lone pipers from Kirkwall City Pipe Band played at various locations throughout Orkney as part of the Battle’s Over – A Nation’s Tribute event.
