Two Oregon State players officially closed the door on their college careers this week when recent major league first-year player draft picks Dylan Pearce and Beau Philip signed contracts.
Philip, a junior shortstop and the 60th pick of the draft earlier this month, signed a deal with Atlanta with a signing bonus of $700,000, according to MLB.com. The signing bonus was well under the No. 60 slot value of $1,157,400.
Pearce, a senior righthanded pitcher who went in the 31st round, signed Friday with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Other Beavers expected to join Pearce and Philip in professional baseball are Adley Rutschman and Grant Gambrell. Rutschman, a catcher and the first overall pick of the 2019 draft by Baltimore, is in Omaha this week collecting national player of the year awards and has yet to sign. Gambrell, a right-handed pitcher and the No. 80 pick overall by Kansas City, said shortly after the draft that he planned to sign.
Lefthanded pitcher Brandon Eisert, righthanded pitcher Bryce Fehmel and outfielder Tyler Malone were also drafted but have yet to sign. Fehmel is a senior and his OSU career is finished, but Eisert and Malone are juniors and eligible to return for their senior seasons.
