Oregon State junior-to-be Spencer Tibbits finds himself in the mix to make the U.S. Open cut after shooting an opening-round 3-over 74 Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Tibbits is tied for 98th out of 156 players in the field. The first-round leader is Justin Rose, who shot a 6-under 65.

Tibbits shot a 3-over 39 on his first nine, then began to make progress on the front nine. He made birdies at the par-4 fourth and par-5 sixth, sandwiching a bogey at the par-3 fifth. Tibbits was 2-over heading into the par-4 ninth, his final hole, where he missed 10-foot par putt and made bogey.
