UPDATE 10 a.m. Friday: This post has been updated to change the start time for the closure of Cornelius Pass Road. New close time is 3 a.m. Monday, July 22.

After several delays, the full closure of Northwest Cornelius Pass Road from U.S. 30 to Kaiser Road is finally scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. Monday, July 22.

The 5-mile stretch of Cornelius Pass has seen a high rate of crashes in recent years, including fatal crashes and truck spills. Increased traffic, high speeds, and rugged terrain all play a part in the high number of crashes, according to Multnomah County. Read more about the planned upgrades for the road here:

And see the detour map for information on recommended routes around the closure.

Multnomah County will replace the drawbridge operation system of the Morrison Bridge over the next two weekends. This means the bridge must be closed to all modes of travel for extended periods of time. According to a recent release, the installation of the new system requires multiple test bridge lifts. The bridge will be closed 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 20, 21 and July 27, 28. The work is not weather dependent.

During the closures, ramps between the bridge and Interstate 5 and Interstate 84 will be closed, except for the ramp from the Morrison Bridge westbound to I-5 north. While the I-5 southbound City Center/Morrison Bridge off-ramp (exit 300) will be closed, the I-5 southbound ramp to Highway 99E/U.S. 26 will be open. Motorists can access Interstate 84 eastbound at Northeast Grand Avenue and at Northeast Everett Street.

To access downtown Portland from the freeways during the closure, I-5 southbound drivers can exit at the Rose Quarter/Broadway Bridge and I-84 westbound drivers can exit at Rose Quarter/Weidler exits.

The Hawthorne Bridge and Burnside Bridge are good alternate crossings for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Drivers in the Mount Vista area of Ridgefield will see a full closure of Northeast 159th Street between 57th and 50th avenues beginning Friday.

Contractor crews while installing sanitary lines in the area noticed erosion and deterioration of the soil beneath the roadway. The closure will allow a contractor to finish the installation of the sanitary lines, stabilize the ground beneath the roadway, and repair portions of the road.

During the closure, local access will be maintained for residents throughout the project area. A signed detour will be in place during the closure and will require drivers to use adjacent roads.

Drivers should expect delays in the project area until the work is completed on Friday, July 26.
