After two delays, Multnomah County hopes to begin the Cornelius Pass Road safety improvement work beginning late Sunday night, July 21. Some of the delays were blamed on delays getting parts for a new traffic signal for U.S. 30 at Newberry Road.
During the 11-week closure access will be maintained for local residents and emergency services. Alternate routes for through traffic are:
• Cars and pickup trucks: From U.S. 30 take Northwest Newberry Road, Northwest Skyline Blvd. and Northwest Old Cornelius Pass Road to Washington County
• Trucks: From U.S. 30 take I-405 south to U.S. 26 west. From July 19-29, large trucks will need to use the I-5/I-405 loop to reach U.S.26 from U.S. 30, due to an ODOT highway project.
• Trucks carrying hazardous loads: These trucks cannot use the U.S. 26 tunnel in Portland. The detour is longer, taking I-5 south to OR 217 north to U.S. 26 west.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has begun a project at the intersection of Northwest 23rd Avenue, Vaughn Street and U.S. 30 as part of the NW 20th Avenue Local Improvement District. The project will reconnect the Slabtown neighborhood and Northwest Portland by extending 20th Avenue and Thurman Street. The project is expected to last until Aug. 13.
During the work, at least one lane will be open in each direction. During heavy use times, before 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m., all lanes at the intersection will be open.
PBOT recommends using an alternate route when possible.
