All lanes on the southbound span of the Interstate Bridge will close the night of Saturday, Aug. 24 for maintenance. Crews will close the bridge 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, through 6 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 25. Oregon-bound I-5 travelers will need to make their way to Interstate 205 via SR 14, SR 500 or on surface streets to cross the river using the Glenn Jackson Bridge. The sidewalk on the southbound span will also be closed during this time.

In other bridge news, crews will begin work on the St. Johns Bridge in North Portland on Sunday. The Oregon Department of Transportation is beginning a maintenance project on the bridge that will close a sidewalk in each direction for up to 30 days beginning 10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25. Only one sidewalk will be closed at any time.

St. Johns Bridge maintenance work

Be ready for bikes in travel lanes on the St. Johns Bridge during maintenance work.

There will also be a temporary speed reduction on the bridge to maintain a safe environment for construction crews and other bridge users. The bridge will be open to vehicles throughout the project, but some overnight lane closures (10 p.m.-5 a.m.) are expected for up to five nights.

Pedestrians and bicycles on the St. Johns bridge will share one sidewalk when the other sidewalk is closed for 30 days at a time for the duration of the 60-day project. The first sidewalk to close is the eastbound side, the side where vehicle traffic travels from Northwest Portland into St. Johns. There will be a temporary access route to guide pedestrians and bicyclists on the sidewalk across the bridge during construction. Bicyclists can also choose to ride in the vehicle travel lane.

And in even more bridges news: The Broadway Bridge closes to motor vehicles 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, August 25 during the “Sunday Parkways” event. The bridge will remain open to bicyclists, pedestrians, and the Portland Streetcar. The drawbridge will still open for river traffic.

Drivers can use the Steel or the Fremont bridges when the Broadway Bridge is closed. TriMet’s 17-Broadway/Holgate bus route will detour to the Steel Bridge.
