The 10 Oregon ZIP codes with fastest increase in COVID-19 cases last week

Medical offices re-open

Oregon has begun releasing ZIP code level data on the outbreak of coronavirus illness in the state. The latest figures show that an outbreak at a single senior care home in West Salem produced the largest weekly spike of reported COVID-19 infections. That is ZIP code 97304.

The next highest ZIP code is not so clear cut because the state suppresses actual numbers for positive tests between 1-9 within a single ZIP code, for fear of identifying someone. If for purposes of analysis, we assume there were nine cases, the ZIP code 97103 in the Astoria-Warrenton area would be next highest. Patrick Allen, head of Oregon Health Authority, said Thursday that Clatsop County was allowed to reopen May 15 because the outbreak was traced to one facility.

Similarly, the data for 97218 in Northeast Portland between Interstates 5 and 205, could have started with 1-9 cases. Of course, that means the percentage increases in those two ZIPs are minimums. According to The Oregonian/OregonLive’s analysis, here are the 10 ZIP codes in Oregon with the highest percentage increase in positive cases week over week.

The Oregonian/OregonLive’s analysis showed infections continued to climb in many of the same neighborhoods that have already been hardest hit. Several of those ZIP codes are home to outbreaks at nursing homes or other group-living facilities.

Six ZIP codes in east Portland, Gresham and Troutdale added a combined 86 cases since last week, an increase of 22%. That raised the total infections in those Multnomah County neighborhoods to 478.

The ZIP codes are 97233, 97230, 97236, 97060, 97080 and 97030.
