Portland police are investigating the stabbing of an off-duty Portland fire lieutenant at a bar on Southwest Morrison Street Saturday night, according to police and fire officials.

Police were called to Kingston Sports Bar & Grill at 2021 Southwest Morrison St. about 8:05 p.m.

A woman called 911 to report that her husband had been randomly stabbed by a stranger.

The victim, a 23-year Portland Fire Bureau veteran, was found stabbed inside the bar, according to Portland Sgt. Kevin Allen and Portland Fire Lt. Laurent Picard.

Picard said late Saturday night that the stabbing was "unprovoked.''

Officers responded to the scene and searched for the suspect. He was described as a man between the ages of 25 and 30, about 5 foot 6 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds, with a short crew cut and a small amount of facial hair. He was described as wearing black pants, a black jacket and a white glove.

He was last seen fleeing on foot eastbound on West Burnside Street, police said. Officers also obtained video surveillance footage of the suspect, and distributed it to officers soon after the assault.

The veteran firefighter was taken by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Allen and Picard said.

Police said Sunday in a release that the lieutenant was conscious and talking to officers on the scene. He suffered cuts to his upper arm and upper torso, they added.

Neither Allen or Picard identified the off-duty fire lieutenant stabbed.

Fire Chief Sara Boone and other ranking fire bureau supervisors responded to the hospital late Saturday night.

The lieutenant was treated at the hospital and released around 11 p.m.

Isaac McLennan, vice president of the Portland Fire Fighters Association that represents line firefighters up to battalion chiefs, said the firefighters in the bureau “went through a shock wave,’’ when they learned of the off-duty lieutenant’s stabbing. “We’re a very tight-knit family, and I think it’s fair to say an injury to one is an injury to all. I’m glad he’s OK,’’ McLennan said.

The case has been sent to Portland Police Bureau Assault Detail detectives, officials said Sunday. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Detective Shaye Samora at 503-823-0768 or Detective Jeff Sharp at 503-823-9773.
