Evan Williams’ 3 RBIs send Oregon baseball past Gonzaga

EUGENE — Evan Williams helped Oregon baseball take an early lead and the Gonzaga bullpen imploded to finish it off.

The Ducks designated hitter went 1 for 4 with a two-run double and RBI walk in a 10-3 Oregon win Tuesday night at PK Park.

Oregon mounted a two-out rally in the first as Spencer Steer worked a walk, Jonny DeLuca singled and Williams drove them in to make it 2-0.

Jakob Goldfarb’s RBI single in the third gave the Ducks a three-run lead but the Bulldogs responded with a two-run double from Nick Nyquist in the top of the fourth.

Gonzaga reliever Trent Schulte struggled in the middle innings, allowing five runs, one earned, on two hits and four walks over 1.2 innings. After an error extended the fifth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases intentionally and Schulte hit a batter and issued back-to-back walks to give Oregon a 7-2 lead.

The Ducks gave a run back with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth, but scored three in the bottom of the frame on a single by Tanner Smith and two-run error that made it 10-3.

Kolby Somers allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four over four innings and Hunter Breault struck out two in a perfect inning of relief to be the pitcher of record for Oregon (26-24, 9-15 Pac-12), which returns to Pac-12 play with a three-game series at USC beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
