EUGENE — Oregon’s wide receiver corps suffered its third blow of the preseason.
Mycah Pittman, the top performing freshman who landed hard on his right shoulder during Oregon’s second fall scrimmage at Autzen Stadium Saturday, is out 6-8 weeks.
“Mycah suffered a shoulder injury while making a diving catch during Saturday’s scrimmage that will result in him missing the start of the 2019 season," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "He is a relentless competitor who will come back stronger and ready to compete this season.”
Pittman, who enrolled in the middle of spring practice and led Oregon receivers with seven catches for 48 yards during the spring game, was having a terrific fall camp, with several spectacular catches and no drops. He is expected to be a major contributor for the Ducks this season.
Jaylon Redd is expected to start at slot and Pittman was backing him up. But Oregon’s depth behind Pittman on the inside is primarily receivers who typically play outside, specifically Johnny Johnson III or Juwan Johnson, who are in line to start at Z and X, respectively.
Pittman’s injury is the third significant injury to a Ducks receiver this preseason, with starter Brenden Schooler suffering a right foot injury that will keep him out 5-7 more weeks and freshman JR Waters also having right foot surgery that will sideline him 4-6 weeks.
