Montana Head Coach Bobby Hauck

Opening Statement…

“I’m disappointed we didn’t come in here and get the win. They have a really good football team. They were better on defense than I thought they were going to be. They have a really nice team and the quarterback is just terrific. We just didn’t have enough for them tonight.”

On the Oregon defense…

“It was really across the board. They covered us and played the run game real well. We knew the nose (tackle) was good. I thought their other defensive linemen played the run a little better than I thought they would. They’ve got good players.”

On Montana’s defensive effort…

“I thought we played hard. We gave up too much…that 60-yard run there at the end because our freshmen can’t do their assignments right. But for the most part, when our non-freshmen were in, we were pretty assignment-conscious. I thought we covered the run game fairly well. They had some guys make some plays. They got the one wheel route in the red zone where we busted coverage, and that was too bad. They were assisted by a key late hit. It was close which I don’t have any problem with…either side of it, the call or the hit. The pass interference call was give and take there on the first drive. We kind of had them stopped. We played ok.”

On giving up a touchdown on the last drive of the first half…

“We missed the field goal and that’s on me. We needed to get to the 30 (yard line) to kick that. That was the plan after the pregame warm-up. It was on the 37 and that’s bad by me not going for it on fourth down there. We had them in our grasp for a 12-yard loss with 10 seconds left and then we lose their guy in man coverage. Instead of being 14-0 at half, it’s 21-0 so we were up against it a little bit more. I would have felt better about things down 14. In retrospect, we didn’t finish drives so maybe it wouldn’t have mattered but maybe it would have. Things tighten up when it’s a little closer.”

On Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert…

“He’s a great kid, first of all. He’s just awesome. He’s got to have something good about him…his dad went to Montana for a couple of years. Mark was at Montana when we were there. I think he was a sophomore when I was a freshman. He’s a good player. I had high regard for him before the game. I just think he’s a smooth operator.”

On what he can take from this game heading into conference play…

“We need to get better. We lost. We came here to win and we didn’t do it.”

On preparing for Oregon’s offensive line…

“They’re really good. I think all five of them are potentially NFL players. Several of them have high-choice grades already. I know that in talking to some of the NFL guys. I was afraid they would knock us off the ball and they did not do that so we probably made progress with all those young D-linemen we played today.”

On Montana linebacker Dante Olson…

“I’ll have to watch the film but I thought Dante—like the rest of our kids on defense—played really hard.”

On Montana wide receivers…

“There were a couple of times we won (at wide receiver) and we had the one pass knocked down when we were down in the red zone. That was open and it was too bad it got batted down at the line of scrimmage but we won on the outside and we won in the slot but not consistently enough. I can’t sit here and say we did a great job. We scored three points.”
