A Gresham man was arrested last week on suspicion of stealing a car with a woman sleeping inside, driving away, raping the woman and leaving her on the side of the road, deputies say.

Amissi Mungomba, 21, is accused of first-degree kidnapping and rape, among other charges. He’s being held in the Multnomah County Detention Center.

The county sheriff’s office said the woman was sleeping in a car in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown neighborhood when Mungomba stole the car and drove it to the Corbett area. He sexually assaulted the woman, according to the sheriff’s office, and left her on the side of the road.

The car was later recovered in North Portland, deputies said.

The victim did not know Mungomba, according to a sheriff’s office spokesman.

Deputies ask anyone who may have seen Mungomba in the area of Northwest Third Avenue and Couch Street between midnight and 3 a.m. on Aug. 8 to call 503-988-0560. Mungomba was arrested and jailed Aug. 9.

The case remains under investigation.
