Portland-area pets in need of emergency care will be among the stars of a new Nat Geo WILD series, “Animal ER Live,” which premieres Saturday, March 30. The new series will be anchored in New York City, but cameras will take viewers to veterinary hospitals and mobile vet emergency units around the country.

Among the facilities featured is Portland’s DoveLewis, the emergency animal hospital, which also provides specialty care. “Animal ER Live”is being billed as a live event series, which promises to put viewers “a heartbeat away” from professionals as they work to save pets around the country.

From the New York studio, host Mark Steines (who was a host of the Hallmark Channel show, “Home & Family” until he was let go from that program last June), and veterinary experts Dr. Justine Lee and Dr. Will Draper, will watch the medical efforts in real time.

The series promises to follow emergency veterinarian teams as they work, and also show waiting rooms, and on-call visits by vets who go to farms or other locations to care for animals that may be too large to travel.

When the series was announced at the Television Critics Association 2019 winter press tour, the press release said the professionals may treat “everything from a sluggish puppy with a fever to a cat with sudden paralysis.”

The other animal hospitals and mobile vet emergency units featured on “Animal ER Live” are located in Boston, Massachusetts; Plainfield, Illinois; Kanab, Utah; Fort Bragg, California; Waller, Texas; and Charleston, South Carolina.

The live event series is scheduled to air for four weeks, and will air Saturday and Sunday nights at 6 p.m. PT, with the first episode airing on Saturday, March 30.
