It’s a good day when people are talking about the smart folks on “Jeopardy!,” which is why the recent flurry of attention paid to James Holzhauer, and his 32-game winning streak, was fun to watch. And there’s more good news. Now, a Portlander is again getting in on the “Jeopardy!” act.

The annual “Jeopardy!” Teen Tournament is about to start, featuring 15 teenagers from various states. They’ll be showing off their knowledge and buzzer skills, competing for a $100,000 grand prize. Students aged 14-17 will play in the two-week event.

Among the players in the 2019 tournament is Avi Gupta, a high school senior from Portland. Gupta, who will graduate from Catlin Gabel on Saturday, will be joined on the quiz show by players from around the country.

Justin Bolsen, a freshman from Canton, Georgia; Avi Gupta, a senior from Portland, Oregon; Jackson Jones, a junior from Louisville, Kentucky; Rohit Kataria, a junior from Wheelersburg, Ohio; Sreekar Madabushi, a junior from Basking Ridge, New Jersey; Lucas Miner, a junior from Miami, Florida; Hannah Nekritz, a senior from Stamford, Connecticut; Teagan O’Sullivan, a freshman from Charlotte, North Carolina; Stephanie Pierson, a junior from Macon, Georgia; Ryan Presler, an eighth-grader from Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Alison Purcell, a senior from Bellaire, Texas; Audrey Sarin, a senior from Redmond, Washington; Eesha Sohail, a senior from Bakersfield, California; Sophia Weng, a junior from Chevy Chase, Maryland; and Shriya Yarlagadda, a sophomore from Grand Blanc, Michigan.

An eighth-grader? Wow. These sound like some pretty intelligent young people. The Teen Tournament starts Monday, June 17, and it will run through June 28.

According to the “Jeopardy!” website, Portland’s Gupta is scheduled to compete on the episode that airs Friday, June 21. He’ll be going up against Hannah Nekritz, the Stamford senior, and Shriya Yarlagadda, the Grand Blanc sophomore.

You can watch “Jeopardy!,” at 7 p.m. (note: KATU starts the “Jeopardy!” broadcast a few minutes early, so be aware) weeknights on KATU.
