Portland-set TV rom-com about a polyamorous trio airs its Season 4 finale

Portlanders may be annoyed at the news that Rose City-set “Stumptown” is filming in Los Angeles. However, that ABC drama is far from the first TV series or movie that pretends to be taking place in Portland, but actually shoots somewhere else. DirecTV subscribers, for example, may have already been watching “You Me Her,” an AT&T Audience Network series described as a “polyamorous rom-com.” The comedy-drama is about a married couple, Jack (Greg Poehler who is, yes, the brother of Amy Poehler) and Emma (Rachel Blanchard) who take a third woman, Izzy (Priscilla Faia) into their lives to become a “throuple." A threesome. Not a couple. Get it?

Anyway, “You Me Her” is supposedly mostly set in Portland, or the Portland area (a suburban enclave called Hawthorne Heights is also featured in the current Season 4). Despite a few exteriors of such spots as signs on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, street scenes featuring actual Portland locations such as the Avalon Theatre on Southeast Belmont Street, the Mary’s Club marquee in downtown Portland and -- of course -- the “Portland, Oregon” sign, “You Me Her” films in the Vancouver, B.C. area.

A character may mention the Pearl District, or we might hear about Portland’s “official poly guru,” a hyperactive guy whose “Poly Training Camp” is intended for those living the polyamorous life, but “You Me Her” is, like “Backstrom” before it, passing off Canada for Portland.

For locals who want to see Portland playing Portland, the Netflix series, “Trinkets,” will feature its teenage characters hanging out in actual Rose City locations. You can catch “Trinkets” when it streams on Netflix beginning June 14.

In the meantime, the Portland-set “You Me Her” is airing the finale of its fourth season at 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 11. Here’s the synopsis for the season: “Emma, Jack and Izzy have moved back to the ‘burbs to start their unconventionally conventional family together, but what if they can’t quite jam their triangular peg into the smooth round hole that is Hawthorne Heights? Are they tempting fate by becoming the dreaded ‘polymonogamists,’ rejecting the open spirit of polyamory so they can wedge back into the life they know? Something’s gotta give, and it just might be the peculiar romance that turned their lives upside down... for the better.”

One other thing -- “You Me Her” throws in some four-letter words and adult content, so if that’s a deal-breaker for you, you’ve been warned.

Production on the fifth and final season of “You Me Her” started in May, and the series is expected to debut in 2020.
