After more than 28 years in business, City Market NW, a high-end grocer housing multiple vendors is not renewing its lease and will close on Aug. 18.

The market on the corner of Northwest Johnson Street and Northwest 21st Avenue is home to Pastaworks, Newman’s Fish Company, Chop Butchery and Raw Raw Produce.

Co-owner of Pastaworks Kaie Wellman confirmed the closure in an email Wednesday.

Pastaworks already has another location at Providore Fine Foods in Northeast Portland. According to a Portland Monthly report, the owners moved there shortly after they closed their original location in 2015 on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard.

Newman’s Fish Company, which has been in business since 1890, currently has no future plans, according to the report. Chop Butchery recently opened Chop St. Johns, a sandwich deli in North Portland. According to the report, the owner of Raw Raw produce has partnered with Chop.

There are plenty of grocery stores in the Nob Hill neighborhood of Northwest Portland, including big names like Fred Meyer, Trader Joes and New Seasons.

Wellman told Portland Monthly the challenge was to stay vibrant and relevant while competing against those big-name grocers.

Co-owner of the nearby Twenty First Ave Kitchen & Bar, Mike Reed, said he was bummed to see another local business close.
