Tad’s Chicken 'n Dumplins, the venerable restaurant on the Historic Columbia River Highway overlooking the Sandy River in Troutdale, is for sale. The building is currently listed on Portland Digs website for $2.5 million.
Tad’s, which calls itself a “roadhouse,” specializes in, well, chicken and dumplings. According to the listing, it’s been in its primo location on the banks of the Sandy River since 1947.
Tad’s said in a Facebook message Tuesday that owner Judy Jones is retiring and selling her business.
“She is very sad, but excited to start a new chapter of her life,” the message said, adding that Jones has been working at Tad’s for over 50 years, starting by doing dishes for her mom, the owner at the time, when she was 10 years old.
“We will still be open as Tad’s Chicken 'N Dumplins until further notice,” the message said.
According to the listing, the building is a “true original” and features “lovely wood paneling, woodwork throughout," a “cozy fireplace for winter evenings,” “charming bar areas," and "seating for around 200 diners in a variety of interesting spaces.”
In 2010, The Oregonian/OregonLive called Tad’s speciality, “a feast of skinless dark and white meat stewed until fork-tender.”
No word yet on what this means for the future of that chicken with a view.
