Two killed in high-speed crash near Aumsville

A 20-year-old driver and her 22-year-old passenger were killed Tuesday evening in a single-vehicle, high-speed crash near Aumsville in Marion County, officials said.

A 1995 Ford Mustang was seen passing a vehicle at high speeds before losing control and crashing at 8:30 p.m. in the 8000 block of West Stayton Road Southeast near Aumsville, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The car became airborne and struck a tree nearly 8 feet off the ground killing the driver and trapping two passengers.

The sheriff's office identified Erika Espell of Stayton as the driver. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Ikaika Kaaihue of Stayton, a passenger in the front seat, died after being transported to Salem Hospital. Brandon McMahan, 20, of Stayton was transported to Salem Hospital with minor injuries, treated and released.

The sheriff's office continues to investigate the crash. Alcohol is involved and seat belts were not believed to be worn by anyone in the vehicle, the sheriff's office said.
