The body of a swimmer who went missing in the water near Rooster Rock earlier this week was recovered from the Columbia River on Friday morning.

River patrol deputies with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office found the body of Hillsboro resident Stephen Coward, 56, in the Columbia River near the Interstate 5 bridge after they responded to a report of a body in the water around 8 a.m. Friday, according to a sheriff’s news release.

Coward was swimming near Sand Island on Monday evening when he disappeared under the water and did not resurface. Friends called 911, and crews responded to search for the lost swimmer but were unable to locate him.
