Man dead, woman injured after 70-foot fall near southern Oregon hot springs

A man died and a woman sustained serious injuries Sunday afternoon after they fell from a 70-foot cliff in southern Oregon, officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call about 1:30 p.m. on the 2000 block of Thorn Prairie Road, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, near the Umpqua Hot Springs about 60 miles east of Roseburg.

Rescue crews arriving on the scene, located within the Umpqua National Forest, found Azrael Maujean, 20, suffering from serious injuries. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg. The also found Christian Simmons, 24, who died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

Both Maujean and Simmons were Grants Pass residents.

Investigators believe both Simmons and Maujean spent the night near the hot springs Saturday and may have gotten lost before falling from the cliff.
