Apartment rent continued to climb in 2019, but Oregon rents are lower than national average

Rents continued to rise across the country last year, according to a report from Rent Café, a nationwide apartment search website. The data shows that rent in Oregon cities is lower than the national average, but still climbing.

  • Here is a sampling of rental rate changes in Oregon:
  • Over the year, Portland rents saw an increase of 3.3% ($49) over the year.
  • Salem rents rose by 4.6% ($47), averaging $1,067.
  • Tualatin saw the biggest increase, with apartment prices rising 6.8% ($90).
  • Happy Valley saw the lowest increase at 0.9% ($13).
  • Lake Oswego prices remain the highest in Oregon, averaging $1,680 per month.
  • Keizer continues its streak as the most affordable place for renters ($1,055).

The most-expensive apartment rentals in the state are found in Lake Oswego, where rent averages $1,680, with Hillsboro apartments averaging $1,567.

Keizer is the cheapest place to rent an apartment, with average rentals at $1,055.

Nationally, apartment rates dipped at the end of the year, showing a low rise of 3%, ($43), and 2020 started with an average $1,474 rental rate.
