Readers respond: The tyranny of Oregon’s current politics

Letters to the editor

I am appalled at the gall that Gov. Kate Brown and the Democratic-controlled Legislature have in passing bills that raise our taxes, make Oregon a sanctuary state and completely disregard the needs of the citizens. I wish the recent recall efforts had been better-organized. They lacked a small number of signatures in order to force a recall vote for Gov. Brown. More advertising would have worked better.

Having a governor, the House and the Senate, and possibly most of the Supreme Court, controlled by one party is what James Madison defined as tyranny in Federalist Papers No. 47. “The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.”

Impeachment would be an improvement, as the Oregon Legislature is the only one in the United States lacking impeachment power over elected and appointed state officials.
