Man shot by cop during traffic stop in Aumsville indicted on charges

Joshua Biles

A 27-year-old man shot by a police officer near Aumsville was indicted Monday on suspicion of ramming the officer's patrol car, injuring a civilian riding with the officer and trying to escape during the encounter.

Joshua B. Biles faces charges of third-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, reckless endangering and attempting to elude a police officer.

Biles survived the June 8 shooting and was later booked into the Marion County Jail. He was released from the jail last Wednesday due to lack of space and ordered to appear in court Wednesday for an arraignment, court records show. He must also stay away from the Aumsville police officer who shot him and the injured passenger.

The encounter began around 1:30 a.m. when Officer Ryan Bambrick tried to pull Biles over near Stayton Road and Bates Road. At some point, Biles fled the scene, was shot and arrested, authorities said.

Bambrick, who state records show has been with the police agency since last year, wasn't injured. A Marion County grand jury determined Bambrick was justified in shooting Biles, according to the county district attorney's office.

Stormie Morlan, who was the passenger in the patrol car, sustained non-life-threatening injuries during what the district attorney's office described as a police ride-along. She confirmed Monday she was hurt when Biles hit the patrol car, but declined to comment further to The Oregonian/OregonLive.

More information on the incident hasn't yet been released. Oregon State Police, which is investigating the shooting, declined comment and referred questions to the Marion County District Attorney's Office. The district attorney's office declined comment citing the ongoing criminal case.
