Portland, metro cities break heat records Tuesday

Portland is only halfway through a projected heat wave this week, but several cities in the area have already broken decades-old heat records, according to the National Weather Service.

On Tuesday, Portland hit 96 degrees, shattering a previous record of 94 for this date, set in 1941. Troutdale broke a 33-year-old record and hit 94 degrees, where the previous record, in 1986, had been 90. McMinnville tied its record from 1940, reaching 95 degrees. Other cities in the area hit mid-90s as well, and are expected to do the same Wednesday.

The National Weather Service warned people that although the coast is usually a place of refuge during the heat, oceanside towns would be unusually hot, as well. Tillamook recorded 88 degrees Tuesday, Astoria hit 86, and Florence reached 85 degrees.

The National Weather Service reminded people who are working or playing outside to be safe, stay hydrated, rest and stay in the shade.
