Police identify semi-truck driver killed in SW Portland I-5 crash

A 50-year-old man has been identified as the driver of a Target semi-truck who died after crashing into a metal highway sign structure on Interstate 5 Wednesday, closing parts of the roadway for more than 16 hours

Portland police said Tony R. Mack was driving north on I-5 around 8:45 p.m. when he lost control of the semi while in the truck lane near the Southwest Barbur Boulevard exit. The semi caught fire after the crash and Mack died at the scene.

Crews with the Oregon Department of Transportation closed the majority of the northbound lanes in the area until around 3:40 p.m. Thursday as they worked to remove the sign structure and the truck.

Public records list Mack at an address in Washington. Police haven’t said if it’s been determined what caused him to lose control of the truck.
