A 3-year-old girl escaped her bedroom in her grandparents’ Northeast Portland home early Wednesday and then wandered more than 14 blocks to a stranger’s house, leading to her father calling 911 hours later frantically looking for her, police say.

The girl, Maya, wasn’t hurt and fled through an unlatched window, Portland police Sgt. Brad Yakots said during a news conference. A resident near Northeast Prescott Street and 28th Avenue reported finding a girl in yellow and pink pajamas he didn’t recognize around 4:15 a.m.

The resident wasn’t able to get the girl’s name or any information about where she lived, police said.

Officers knocked on doors for 14 blocks looking for Maya’s family, Yakots said. Her grandparents live a little beyond the area where police searched, he said.

Police announced around 8:30 a.m. that Maya’s father called 911 identifying himself as her parent. Yakots described the father as distraught when he contacted police. The girl’s family recently moved from Washington.

Yakots said the father is being interviewed by officers and workers with the Department of Human Services before being reunited with his daughter.
