The man fatally shot by Gresham police Sunday has been publicly identified as a 49-year-old Southeast Portland resident.

A police officer shot Israel Berry, who died at the scene in the 12400 block of Southeast Kelly Street in Portland. Berry died of a gunshot wound.

The officer, who hasn’t been publicly identified, was working in Portland to provide mutual aid amid protests in the city.

Few details about the circumstances of the shooting have been released.

Portland police said the Gresham officer and several Portland officers responded about 9:35 p.m. to a call of a disturbance involving a white man making threats on Kelly Street. At some point during an encounter between the man and police, the Gresham officer deployed deadly force.

The Gresham officer wasn’t physically hurt. The officer has been put on critical incident leave, as is standard policy after police shootings.

The Portland officers did not fire their weapons.

An investigation is ongoing.

The shooting was not related to large Portland protests that have occurred daily since late last week in response to the killing of George Floyd, a black Minneapolis man who died after a white police officer knelt for several minutes on his neck despite his pleas that he could not breathe.
