Police fatally shot a man who had been making threats Sunday in Southeast Portland, authorities say.

A Gresham police officer shot the man, who died at the scene in the 12400 block of Southeast Kelly Street. The officer was working in Portland to provide mutual aid amid protests in the city.

The shooting was not related to large Portland protests that have occurred daily since Friday in response to the in-custody death of a black man in Minneapolis who died after officers ignored his pleas that he could not breathe while restrained.

Few details about Sunday’s police shooting have been released.

Portland police said a Gresham officer and several Portland officers responded about 9:35 p.m. to a call of a disturbance involving a man making threats on Kelly Street. At some point during an encounter between the man and police, the Gresham officer deployed deadly force.

The circumstances of the shooting weren’t immediately clear.

The Gresham officer wasn’t physically hurt. The officer has been put on critical incident leave, as is standard policy after police shootings.

The Portland officers did not fire their weapons.

An investigation is ongoing. No one involved in the incident has been publicly identified.
