A HOSPICE has received almost £40,000 in donations after relaunching its headline summer fundraiser.

Sobell House has revealed the current sponsorship tally from its Light the Night event in Oxford, which saw more than 400 supporters walk around the city with florescent outfits, lights and glow sticks.

The event took place on Saturday, July 20, to replace and expand on the hospice's former annual Moonlight Stroll, and so far participants have raised just over £36,000.

Fire shows, entertainers and a new route revitalised the 10-mile marshalled walk, starting at Bury Knowle Park in Headington.

Cara Waller, events manager at Sobell House, said: "We were thrilled to see more than 420 people glow up to take part in the event.

"The weather held out, and as the sun went down, all of the walker’s outfits really glowed and shone around the city.

"We would like to say a huge thank you to all who stepped out to support the event, and helped to create such a fantastic atmosphere.

"It was inspiring to see all of our Sobell House heroes return across the finish line to receive a very well-deserved medal, after 10 miles of pounding the pavements."

The hospice had hoped to raise £20,000 but has excelled that target, and is inviting walkers to make a final push for donations to take it over the £40,000 mark.

Ms Waller added: "Every penny counts – it’s not too late to ask for sponsorship."

Sobell has confirmed via Facebook that Light the Night will return next year, and said the night was 'magical.'

The post thanked volunteers for their 'invaluable support and fabulous energy' and supporters for helping to 'enhance our patient’s lives in their final days.'
