NEW restrictions put in place to stop drivers 'dangerously' parking beneath an underpass have had an immediate impact, according to the county council.

Yellow lines were put in place around the Cowley roundabout where Garsington Road meets the Eastern Bypass Road this week.

Wardens issued 28 warning notices on Wednesday and further checks at 9am this morning found that there was only one car parked in the makeshift car park.

Previously between 40 and 50 vehicles were seen parked on the site with residents fearing they could cause an accident by emerging unexpectedly onto the busy roundabout.

City councillor for Blackbird Leys Linda Smith, who has raised the issue on behalf of constituents said: “I’m pleased the county council and their parking enforcement contractor have got a grip on the dangerous parking which was happening at this site, although it’s unfortunate that it is only the issuing of fines which seems to influence driver behaviour.

"I’ll be continuing to push for more enforcement action against local workers who park irresponsibly on the estate."
