SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield NAACP is supporting LBGTQ students at Kickapoo High School.

Earlier this month posters commemorating the day of silence were ripped down. That same day, other students drove in the school’s parking lot with a confederate flag.

In a press release today, the NAACP says it stands against any actions that demean individuals, and that all people should be considered equal.

The organization also claims students were bullied online and wants SPS to enforce anti-cyberbullying policies and to hold students accountable for their actions.

The NAACP also asks the district to adopt a zero-tolerance-policy for displaying the Confederate flag.

SPS spokesperson Stephen Hall responded to those comments tonight, saying district policy does include cyber-bullying. He said the students involved in the incident were disciplined appropriately.

Parents and students received messages, making it clear disrespect of any kind will not be tolerated. Hall says school leaders continue to work with LGBTQ students to show support for their safety and well-being.
