Inside Travis Scott’s Surprise Netflix Party in Houston — Rap Superstar Takes Over Movie Store

It’s no secret that Houston native and music superstar Travis Scott has a penchant for pop-ups. And he loves to reveal the surprise in dramatic ways. The Astroworld rapper just boldly announced his latest Space City stop out of the blue on Instagram in the middle of an ordinary summer weekday.

And what diehard fan would miss the chance to breathe the same air as the crazy-popular rapper, especially in his hometown?

On Thursday night, Scott posted a tantalizing message on Instagram to his 18.5 million followers. “GOT SOMETHING U MIGHT WANNA SEE IT … !!! MEET ME HERE NETFLIX AND NO. CHILL. 11200 Northwest Freeway, Suite 300 Houston, TX 77092.”

The thrilling message accompanied a few photos of VHS tapes splashed with a shouting Scott and “Look Mom I Can Fly.”

Scott may be one of the hottest rappers around in current times, but you could definitely say he’s into throwbacks and nostalgia.

The pop-up was dedicated to his new Netflix documentary of the same name, which debuts Wednesday, August 28.

Before long, winding lines of fans waited, bated breath, wrapped around the building of the used entertainment retail shop, Movie Exchange, at 11200 Northwest Freeway. Scott ran up and down the line, hyping the growing crowd. Some fans waited up to an hour and a half to get a close-up with Scott inside.

Once inside, every single fan got a free copy of the upcoming documentary. Scott was more than happy to sign the limited edition, old-school, haven’t-seen-your-style-in-years VHS tapes, as well as give out enthusiastic high-fives.

Posters for “Look Mom I Can Fly” lined the walls, and a DJ spun tons of Scott’s tracks.  A short-but-sweet, 60-second trailer of the documentary even played on a throwback TV.

The preview showed flashes of the star’s life, spanning his childhood to his electric performances. And it’s no surprise there were scenes of Scott’s whirlwind romance with beauty billionaire and young mom Kylie Jenner. Scott and Jenner’s adorable daughter Stormi also gets some love in the movie.

Scott’s previous pop-up took place all over Houston, studding Bayou City with giant inflatable gold versions of his head to promote his Astroworld album. He also made headlines this February when Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner gave the Sickomode singer a sick shout-out during a speech about the possibility of an all-new Houston theme park that could the iconic rival AstroWorld.

But that was only the sweet, sweet precursor to the big Netflix party surprise.

First stop, Movie Exchange. Second stop, wherever the heck you can buy a VCR these days.
