The midway will be silent this summer, with the cancellation of the Hubbard County Fair due to COVID-19.

The 125th annual Hubbard County Fair has been cancelled.

Russell Smith, president of the Shell Prairie Agricultural Association, said “after much consideration and with great disappointment” the organization voted to cancel the 2020 event.

“This decision did not come easily and was postponed multiple times,” he said in a news statement. “We have been in close contact with state and county officials, including 4-H Extension Office and the Minnesota Federation of County Fairs, where multiple recommendations came to cancel the fair.”

Smith said the association has been “tracking very closely the governor’s restrictions and the recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control. We do not believe that we will be able to successfully operate the 2020 fair in a financially responsible manner while maintaining public safety.”

Smith said they are looking ahead to next year and “how to make it a memorable fair. The fair board will be working hard to complete projects already in progress for this year. You will be seeing improvements to the grounds as we are always looking to make everyone’s experience a memorable time at the fair.”

The association thanked all visitors, sponsors, vendors and volunteers for their efforts.

“The county fair is a place where we all can come and enjoy one of the longest lasting community traditions,” Smith wrote. “Some come to compete in the show ring, some to present history, others to take in a demo derby or monster truck. In the end, we all come to the fair to celebrate each other’s accomplishments.”
