Filing is closed; here are the candidates

Note: This article was updated June 7 to show that District 5A State Rep. John Persell is running for reelection and Matt Bliss is the challenger.

Candidate filing closed Tuesday, June 2, for the Minnesota primary election Aug. 11. No-excuse absentee voting by mail or in person is open June 26 through Aug. 10. The general election will be held Nov. 3.

Hubbard County Board

Both Hubbard County commissioners up for reelection this year – Char Christenson (District 2) and Dan Stacey (District 4) – are running unopposed.

Soil & Conservation District

Three Hubbard County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) supervisors – Districts 1,2 and 3 – are on the November ballot.

SWCD supervisors serve four-year terms.

Donald Rettinger is re-running for the District 1 position, which represents Fern, Rockwood, Helga, Lake Hattie, Schoolcraft, Lake Alice, and Lake George townships.

Marcel Noyes seeks re-election as District 2 supervisor, which represents Farden, Guthrie, Hart Lake, Hendrickson, Lakeport and Steamboat River township.

No candidate filed for District 3, which includes Clover, Clay, Thorpe, Arago, Lake Emma, Mantrap, and Akeley townships. Contact the Hubbard County SWCD for more information about the openings at 732-0121 ext. 4.

State Legislature

  • Senate District 2 (includes most of Becker County): Republican incumbent Paul Utke of Park Rapids has filed, as has DFL-endorsed challenger Leonard Alan Roy of rural Ogema (the current White Earth secretary-treasurer).

  • House District 2A (includes most of Hubbard, Beltrami and Lake of the Woods counties): Republican Mathew J. Grossell of Clearbrook will face DFLer Jeremiah Liend of Turtle River.

  • House District 2B (includes most of Becker County and a portion of Hubbard County): Republican incumbent Steve Green of Fosston will face DFL challenger David Suby of rural Detroit Lakes, a business owner of 43 years.

  • House District 5A: DFL incumbent John Persell of Bemidji is running for reelection. His Republican challenger is Matt Bliss of Pennington.

U.S. Congress

Four people have filed for U.S. House in Congressional District 8, including Republican-endorsed incumbent Pete Stauber of Duluth and DFL-endorsed challenger Quinn Nystrom of Brainerd.

The other two candidates are Judith Schwartzbacker from the Grassroots-Legalize Cannabis Party and Harry Welty, a Republican.
