Harrisburg puts defense, speed on display during scrimmage with Williamsport

It may not be a well-oiled machine at this stage in the season, but Harrisburg’s first live action Saturday proved plenty.

For starters, the Cougars took the fight to visiting Williamsport at Severance Field and put its dominant defense to work.

Second, the Cougars’ offense isn’t that far behind. Calvin Everett’s offense, guided by platooning QBs Nicari Williams and John McNeil, posting five touchdowns against the Millionaires.

Cornerback Trevion Carey chipped in a pick-6 as Harrisburg prepped for Friday’s season opener at Coatesville.

“I think we did what we were supposed to do,” said Everett, who watched starting RB Jahmir Plant take the game’s first carry 74 yards to the Williamsport 1.

“We made some big plays and our defense played really well. We got to the ball and the guys were working hard. So that’s all I can really ask for right now.”

Williams accounted for two TD passes, one a 60-yard heave to Donte Kent, and McNeil hooked up with Carey for Harrisburg’s fourth score. Carey later snared a perfect slant from Williams inside the Millionaires’ 10.

It wasn’t all good news for Harrisburg. Junior linemen Layne Brannon suffered an apparent left leg injury on Harrisburg’s second series and did not return.
