A longtime business in Harrisburg has closed.
Downtown News in Harrisburg closed earlier this month.
The store at 29 N. Second St. sold newspapers, magazines, books, snacks, lottery tickets and other items, and was open long hours especially on the weekends.
The owners of the store also own the three-story building which houses the store. The property will be sold later this month, and the current owners will focus on another business, according to Michael Chan, a real estate agent with Iron Valley Real Estate of Central Pa. who represented the current owners.
The store has been owned by multiple people over the years and at one time was known as Town News. The store was previously located at 19 N.Second St.
Dolly Shabnam Sachedeva, a real estate agent with Calvary Realty, who represents the buyer, says that the new owners are still in the very early planning stages but, are planning a mixed-use site with retail on the bottom floor and apartments on the top floors with the possibility of adding floors to the current building. The store will likely be similar to the current store, she said.
The building was built in 1900, according to Dauphin County property records.
#DowntownNews closed on June 7; while we're bummed to see them go, there are still plenty of places downtown where you can pick up your favorite publications! @CafeFrescoCC, Market on Market, and New York Deli & Convenience Store are just a few of the places you can grab a paper. pic.twitter.com/GukQS5d4u9
