Pennsylvania sunflower fields and festival hit their peak

Sunflower fields in bloom

Sunflower farms across Pennsylvania are near their peak.

Sunflower season in Pennsylvania has reached its peak. While the big bright blooms will remain fresh a bit longer farther to the north and some sunflower festivals are scheduled for a few weeks from now, this weekend could be the last best chance to experience waving fields of sunflowers across much of central Pennsylvania.

Here are some prime opportunities.

Maple Lawn Farms, New Park, has 8 acres planted in sunflowers, both the classic giant and a dozen other varieties.

Country Barn Farm Market, Lancaster, will host a Sunflower Festival Saturday and Sunday, August 24-25, including wagon rides to its 5 acres of sunflower fields, food and activities for the kids.

The sunflower patch at Oregon Dairy, Lititz, will be open the next 2 weekends and on Labor Day, September 2. Hayrides and a corn maze are part of the experience. A sunflower painting class in the field will be offered Saturday, August 24, and Yoga in the Sunflower Field is scheduled for Wednesday, August 28, Thursday, August 29, and Saturday, August 31.

The famous sunflower field next to the Please Wash Me Carwash in Elverson is in its blooming’ glory again this year, and even hosted a wedding earlier this month.

Hellerick’s Family Farm, Doylestown, will hold its Sunflower Festival the next 2 weeks and Labor Day, September 2. With a 2-acre field of sunflowers open to exploration and photography, the festival also features a festival tent, educational sessions about sunflowers, hayrides and an Adventure Farm of 40 family activities.

The 10th generation of the Landis Family on the farm near Harleysville changed from traditional farming to growing sunflowers for flowers and seeds in 1996. The farm stand at the farm, now known as Sunrise Sunflower Farm, is open daily through September.

The Sunflowers at Smyser’s fields near York will be open today through Sunday. The event includes a sunflower maze, a kids’ corn box that substitutes dried corn kernels for sand, a petting zoo, face painting, monster slides and more.

Risser-Marvel Farm Market & Corn Maze, Annville, will host the Lebanon County Sunflower Festival Saturdays and Sunday, September 7, 8, 14 and 15.

Second Mountain Sunflowers, Tamaqua, will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through September 24.
