United States Census Bureau has some jobs to fill, and fast.
The Harrisburg office of the U.S. Census Bureau is looking to fill 3,200 positions at their Harrisburg office over the next 60 days. The positions include census takers and office personnel, and pay between $16.50 and $21.50 an hour.
However, the positions will be temporary. The Census Bureau itself is touting the opportunity to join the “gig economy,” with the census positions serving as side jobs or part-time work which may be done during off hours.
The push for hires comes in advance of the 2020 Census, which will officially begin nationally on April 1. The census is conducted every 10 years, and helps determine funding on local, state and federal levels for a wide range of services, from hospitals and schools to road maintenance and construction. It will also determine the number of representatives sent from each state to the United States Congress.
The rate of pay for census takers and office staff for the 2020 Census varies by area, depending on how many staffers are needed for the region and how urgently the positions need to be filled. For instance, in several counties in eastern Pennsylvania, the rates have risen from $19.50 an hour to $27.50 per hour.
