Library system buys Harrisburg building, prepares for expansion

McCormick Riverfront Library expansion

The Dauphin County Library System is looking to expand the McCormick Riverfront Library with the purchase of an adjacent property.

In a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for the Dauphin County Library System, the McCormick Riverfront Library has a chance to grow.

The Dauphin County Library System Board of Trustees announced that the system was able to acquire a building immediately adjacent to the McCormick Riverfront Library, which will become an expansion of the library.

The property, 27 North Front Street, Harrisburg, is described as a three-story, federal-type building that was once home to several governors, according to the news release.

It was also once home to Sara Haldeman Haly, who was the original benefactor of the Harrisburg Public Library that would later become the McCormick Riverfront Library.

Plans are being developed to provide extra space in the library building for children’s and family activities, and will allow for restoration and perseveration of a historic landmark.

“The McCormick Riverfront Library is an important resource in downtown Harrisburg, and I fully support this transformative project,” said Mayor Eric Papenfuse at a ceremony to announce the expansion. “Libraries have a positive impact in the communities they serve, and we are excited that this development will provide even more opportunities for education and growth in our great city.”

A release from the library system said support for the expansion project will be sought through a capital campaign and will begin in the coming months.

The property was acquired debt free, purchased at $295,000 in part with endowment income that includes funds specified for sustaining McCormick Riverfront Library and general library operations, according to the release.

Dauphin County Commissioners voiced support for the project in the press release, with Commissioner Mike Pries saying that part of improving the quality of life in Dauphin County is improving the library system.

“This expansion will not only provide additional space for children’s and family activities but also will preserve an historic landmark in perpetuity,” said Comissioner George Hartwick.
