The MLK Leadership Development Institute on Thursday held a community stakeholders meeting regarding Pre-K and STEAM education at Harrisburg University.
Presenting the pre-k initiative on behalf of the MLK Institute team was Bret Peters, AIA. It showed the Harrisburg school readiness percentage could be increased from 35 percent to 95 percent by having retired teachers teach in city and neighboring daycare centers. Pre-k children would be trained in reading, math, and robotics for not longer than 30 minutes a day.
Meanwhile, the National Society of Black Engineers has been asked by MLK to return to Harrisburg and conduct its Summer Engineering Experience for Kids in 2020 and set up a year-round NSBE Jr. program.
Finally, the organization’s pre college manager Brittnay Boyd committed to assist the institute with its additional planning to confirm interest within area school districts.
Reginald A. Guy Jr., MLK cofounder, presided at the meeting.
